Fly me to the Moon!
If you could book a flight tomorrow for anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I was at a Target in Irvine, CA last July and I was perusing, what I call, the journal aisle. The shelves were filled with daily planners, diaries/journals, calendars, anything you can think of to help you stay organized. I also saw note taking journals for church sermons and books for art work. There was one that caught my eye. It read, “300 Writing Prompts.” I bought two of them. I kept one and gave the other to my fellow English teacher at the school where I work. She was happy with the gift and I was happy I found it.
As a new teacher, and the older I get, I’m finding I need new avenues to escape. Yes traveling out of town helps, but I need to escape mentally as well. When you have to work with sixty-seven teenagers on a daily basis, I need something to relieve the daily headache. Don’t misunderstand me, I love my students. I think of them as my own, but sometimes I need to keep my classroom door closed. An empty classroom and my writing journal takes me to a whole new place.
So in this writing prompt journal are questions. Topics include life choices, food choices, would you rather questions, family questions. There are some very deep questions in this journal as well as fun topics too. Here are some examples:
Should Earth consider colonizing Mars?
What was the hardest choice you ever had to make?
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
If I looked under your bed, what would I find?
Describe the day you graduated high school?
Interesting questions right? These just scratch the surface. I truly enjoy answering these writing prompts. I liked them so much, I’ve had my students answer some of these in their writing journals. I love reading their responses. It is meant to be a fun thing to do but I also see it as a time of reflection. There are questions about religion and self awareness that really make you think before you answer. Is it a diary? In a way it is, but instead of writing down your own thoughts, these prompts will guide you.
In conclusion, I do hope you’ll consider purchasing a writing prompt journal. Find a quiet place to sit at home, or, head to the beach or your favorite coffee shop, pull out a pencil and start writing. I think you’ll find it relaxing and rewarding.
So, what about the question I asked at the start of this post? Here’s your homework assignment. Answer this for me in the comment section: If you could book a flight tomorrow for anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? Yes I will be grading your work. Me? Right now I would fly to Rome, Italy and work my way throughout the country. Viva Italia!
